The government’s ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) cars by 2030 is no doubt a cause for concern for fuel retailers, especially when combined with the exponential growth of electric vehicle sales. Eventually, retailers will be compelled to invest in their sites and reshape the way they operate or face extinction – but when we rationalise the facts, how imminent is the danger?
The average life expectancy of a car is 14 years and as a consequence, new petrol and diesel cars bought in late 2029 could remain on the road until 2044 at least. Furthermore, there are approximately four times as many used cars sold every year than their new counterparts; the ban only applies to new vehicle sales. In other words, we will still need a considerable number of conventional fuel dispensers to satisfy the needs of UK motorists for the foreseeable future.
