TSG UK is pleased to welcome Matt Cooper as its new Solar Business Development Director, joining the company in September 2025 to lead the growth of TSG Solar within the wider New Energies division. With a background in engineering and extensive experience in photovoltaic (PV) development, Matt brings a strategic mindset and a clear ambition to help businesses harness the power of solar.
Matt’s career has taken him across the energy sector, most recently at Custom Solar – Mitie, where he led solar projects for some of the UK’s largest organisations. One of his proudest achievements was delivering a multi-site framework agreement for British Aerospace (BAE), coordinating with multiple stakeholders to overcome planning, grid and commercial challenges. “It wasn’t just about scale,” he explains. “It was about turning renewable energy into a strategic asset, helping the client move towards net zero and build resilience against energy volatility.”
Matt was drawn to TSG UK by its reputation for technical excellence and its established presence in critical infrastructure. He saw an opportunity to build on that foundation and integrate solar into a broader energy offering. “TSG can deliver complete solutions,” he says. “Our in-house capabilities combine solar photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), electric vehicle (EV) charging, Independent Connection Provider (ICP) services and our energy management platform, TSG Protect. This allows us to support clients on their sustainability journey with a turnkey solution.”
His vision for TSG Solar is ambitious. Over the coming years, he aims to position the division as a leading Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) provider for commercial and industrial clients, recognised for high-quality installations and delivering fully integrated energy systems. “We want to help businesses take control of their energy future,” he says. “Reducing costs, supporting their sustainable ambitions and building energy resilience”
TSG Solar will draw on the company’s national reach and technical expertise, with over 300 field engineers already supporting clients across the UK. The division will also leverage TSG Protect, the company’s Energy Management platform, to ensure long-term performance and reliability of renewable assets through ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M).
Matt’s strategy is built on three pillars: credibility, capability and customer focus. He plans to build on TSG’s reputation for safety and professionalism, invest in in-house engineering and design, and offer clients a transparent, agnostic solution-led approach. “We want to make solar simple and commercially viable,” he says. “Our goal is to become the trusted partner for businesses looking to decarbonise and future-proof their facilities from energy price volatility.”
The UK solar market presents both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, strong policy support and net-zero commitments are driving demand. Many commercial sites have underused rooftops or land that could be transformed into energy-generating assets. The rise of battery storage and hybrid systems is also unlocking new value, allowing businesses to store excess energy, manage peak loads and improve resilience.
On the other hand, grid constraints, connection delays and regulatory uncertainty continue to pose hurdles. “Even ideal sites can be held back by grid limitations,” Matt notes. “However, reforms are underway, and the connection process is improving to support faster, more efficient access to the grid.”
Matt sees solar and battery storage as a natural pairing. Together, they offer not just clean energy but greater control and flexibility across different usage scenarios. “Solar alone is fantastic,” he explains, “but the ability to use Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for energy arbitrage can significantly improve return on investment (ROI). With batteries, you can store excess energy, manage demand and even provide backup during outages. It’s about turning renewables into reliable infrastructure.”
TSG Solar will work closely with other business lines to deliver end-to-end solutions. By integrating solar with EV charging, battery storage and energy management, the company can help clients decarbonise holistically. Internally, design and engineering teams are being aligned to ensure seamless delivery across disciplines. “Clients want one trusted partner,” Matt says. “TSG is uniquely positioned to offer that. Not only as a UK Solar EPC but as a Pan European Solar EPC for multinational organisations” With over 3,600 technicians operating across 30 countries, TSG Group delivers energy and retail solutions at scale. From service stations and mobility hubs to fleet operators and commercial sites, TSG provides a one-stop shop for responsible energy infrastructure.
Feasibility studies and return on investment (ROI) modelling will play a key role in helping clients make informed decisions. Every site is different, and Matt’s team will provide clear, data-driven insights into technical potential, system design and financial outcomes. “We build models that show real-world savings and returns,” he says. “It’s about giving clients confidence and clarity.”
Matt’s passion for renewable energy is rooted in his belief that engineering can drive positive change. “It’s where innovation, responsibility and strategy meet,” he says. His engineering background has shaped a practical and analytical mindset. It also allows him to see the bigger picture: how technologies can work together to deliver meaningful impact.
Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife Danielle and their two children, Ava and Oliver. He’s a keen swimmer and finds satisfaction in DIY projects.
TSG UK is excited to have Matt on board and looks forward to seeing TSG Solar grow under his leadership.
