Hurricane operates 73 self-service stations across Iceland, all open 24/7 and focused on providing low-cost fuel to customers who pay directly at the pump. As Orkan expanded into EV charging, the need arose to create a consistent customer experience, integrate existing loyalty programmes, offer familiar payment methods and maintain full control over all transactions.

Project description

The project focused on supporting Orkan’s expansion into EV charging by providing a comprehensive and scalable payment and system setup across both fuel and charging stations. The aim was to ensure a consistent customer experience, enable familiar payment methods and integrate EV charging into Orkan’s existing infrastructure – whilst maintaining full control over transactions and loyalty programmes within the network.

TSG’s solution

TSG delivered an integrated payment and system solution that combines Tokheim Prizma, Crypto payment terminals and the OASE host platform across Orkan’s petrol stations and EV charging points. The solution enables Orkan to use a single card configuration for both refuelling and EV charging, allowing customers to pay with the same card across all energy services.

Crypto payment terminals and Kempower chargers have been installed at selected locations, ensuring a consistent payment experience regardless of the type of energy. The integration of dispensers, charging infrastructure, payment terminals and back-end systems enables Orkan to manage transactions centrally whilst retaining full operational control.

By consolidating the systems into a single, unified setup, Orkan reduces operational complexity, simplifies maintenance and creates a scalable foundation for further expansion of EV charging across the network. The solution reflects local market requirements in Iceland, where self-service, reliability and 24/7 availability are crucial to customer satisfaction.

Results and impacts

The integrated payment and system setup has enabled Orkan to deliver a consistent customer experience across petrol stations and EV charging points. With a common card and payment configuration, customers can access all energy services in the same way, which enhances recognition and user-friendliness in a fully self-service environment.

Centralised transaction management gives Orkan full control over payments, loyalty programmes and customer data across the network – whilst reducing operational complexity and maintenance requirements. The overall setup also simplifies the onboarding of new charging points and supports further expansion without the need for additional systems or parallel payment solutions.

Overall, the Orkan solution provides a scalable and future-proof platform that supports the transition from traditional fuel retail to multi-energy services – whilst maintaining the operational reliability, availability and operational efficiency required for 24/7 operations in the Icelandic market.
