AC or DC chargers at the depot?

Vans that stay at the depot all night often manage with AC charging. If they arrive in the middle of the day and need to leave again quickly, DC fast charging is required, and many depots end up using a combination of the two.

We’ll start by looking at your routes, operating hours and network capacity. Based on that, we’ll work out how many chargers are needed and how powerful they need to be.

Electric lorries charge at their own depot

You own the chargers

If you mainly charge your own cars at your own depot, there’s little point in paying someone else for every kilowatt-hour. With a charging solution from TSG, you own the chargers, and the electricity flows directly from your connection to the cars.

This is what we provide

We’ll take care of the entire project, so you’ll have a single point of contact, from the initial calculations right through to the day the chargers need servicing.
  • AC chargers for depots where cars are parked overnight
  • DC fast chargers for cars that need to be back on the road quickly
  • Controlled charging, which distributes the power between the chargers
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Service and maintenance whilst the chargers are in operation

When the network can’t keep up

At a depot, vehicles often return at the same time and need to be ready again the following morning. This requires a large amount of power all at once, and in many places the power supply cannot provide this without an upgrade, which takes time and costs money.

There are two ways to get round this. Controlled charging distributes the power between the chargers so that they do not all draw full power at the same time. And an on-site battery is charged when the load is low and supplies power when the cars need charging. If you have solar panels on your roof, the battery can also store the electricity you generate yourself.

In Denmark, we supply battery systems and solar panels in partnership with our sister company, NRGreen. Read about battery systems at NRGreen

Chargers from manufacturers whose products we install and service

The chargers need to last for many years, so we choose manufacturers whose chargers we can install and service throughout their entire lifecycle. At our depot, we supply DC chargers from Alpitronic, Kempower and Ekoenergetyka, and we’ll help you choose the charger that suits your vehicles and your operations.

Kempower. A modular system that is well suited to car parks where many cars are parked in rows. A single power unit supplies up to eight charging sockets, and the satellite units can be positioned up to 80 metres away from the main unit. This means the chargers can be placed where the cars are parked, whilst the power unit is located elsewhere. Kempower chargers are in use at Orkan in Iceland, amongst other places.

Alpitronic. The Hypercharger series comprises high-power DC fast chargers.

Ekoenergetyka. DC chargers, including those for buses and heavy goods vehicles.

How we work

1. We are mapping out our operations. How many vehicles need charging, how far do they travel, and when do they come to a standstill? And how much power can your grid connection supply today?

2. We design the solution. The number and type of chargers, where they should be located in the depot, and whether controlled charging or a battery is required.

3. We install and commission the system. We are responsible for project planning and implementation, and the chargers are tested and commissioned before we hand them over.

4. We provide a service. The chargers need to work every day for many years, so maintenance begins on the very day they are put into service.

A service that keeps the chargers up and running

A vehicle that’s stationary at five o’clock in the morning is a van or lorry that won’t be going anywhere. That’s why service is part of the package from day one, not just when something goes wrong.

We have our own service teams in all seven countries in the Nordic region and the Baltic states. Preventative maintenance keeps the chargers up and running, and if a fault occurs, a technician will come out. If an urgent issue arises outside opening hours, you can also get help.

One partner, whilst the fleet changes

Few vehicle fleets will switch to electric power all at once. For a long time to come, the depot will need to be able to refuel with diesel, HVO and gas, and charge electric vans and lorries. At TSG, you can get charging, fuel and gas from a single supplier. We take care of the installation and subsequent servicing, and the chargers can be connected to the fuel and fleet management systems you already have with us.

You can see how this works in practice at Orkan in Iceland, where fuel and charging are part of the same system. Read the Orkan case study

The TSG Group has installed over 55,000 charging points in 30 countries. We draw on that experience when we build yours.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need an operator to run the chargers?

Not if you’re mainly charging your own cars at your own charging station. In that case, you can own the chargers yourselves, and we’ll install and service them.

Can our mains supply cope with that?

That’s the first thing we look into. If there isn’t enough capacity, controlled charging or a battery on site can often sort it out, so you don’t have to wait for a full grid boost.

We already have diesel and gas in stock. Can you take that as well?

Yes. TSG also supplies and maintains fuel and gas systems, so you can have everything managed by a single partner.

Should we electrify the entire fleet all at once?

No. You can start with just a few chargers and expand as more cars become electric. We’re planning so that the expansion is part of the plan from the outset.

Can you service chargers that we’ve bought from another supplier?

Yes. Our technicians are factory-trained and service charging points from a range of manufacturers, even after the warranty period has expired.
