Destination charging on the road to success

The recent exponential rise in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on Ireland’s roads has created an acute need to increase the number of charging stations concurrently, to avoid range anxiety becoming a real issue for EV drivers. If there are too few chargers to satisfy demand, it could result in long queues and frustrated motorists and potentially a fall in future EV sales, which would represent a significant backward step in the race to net zero.

Home chargers are by far the most widely used form of recharging, with more than 70% of Ireland’s EV owners choosing to power their vehicles in this way. Home charging typically takes place overnight, especially for those on time-of-use tariffs that can take advantage of cheaper electricity rates. However, in order to further the progress of a nationwide transition to EVs, it is evident that substantial growth of the associated public-charge infrastructure is required.

To help support this growth, many forward-thinking businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors are investing in EV charge points for their premises, to attract new visitors and cultivate repeat business.

Workplace EV Charging

The way forward - destination charging

For EV drivers, the availability of charge points situated at places they frequent is considered to be a real bonus, and likely to influence their choice of destination.

As only a few service stations provide charging facilities, it makes perfect economic sense for public and semi-public places, such as hotels, supermarkets, gymnasiums, restaurants, shopping centres and cinemas to install charge points on site for their customers.

Whilst the initial capital expenditure can seem quite formidable, the impact is only temporary and these businesses will soon begin to see a return on their investment (ROI). The installation will encourage visitors to stay longer, attract transients and develop loyalty and advocacy amongst regular clients.

Destination charging

Communicating values

Providing EV charging facilities allows a business to strengthen customer engagement and demonstrate its dedication to delivering key amenities to meet the needs of shoppers both now and in the future.

In these eco-conscious times, consumers are willing to change their shopping habits to reduce their environmental impact and prefer to shop at establishments that illustrate their commitment to sustainability. An on-site EV charge station is a clear indicator that a retail outlet takes its social responsibility objectives very seriously indeed, with the indirect benefit of reinforcing its brand image.

Workplace EV Charging

Securing ROI

Retail, leisure and hospitality enterprises equipped with their own charge stations have a golden opportunity to generate additional income by hiring out their charge points to visitors, adjacent businesses and the local community, thus securing a rapid return on their investment.

Furthermore, charge point installations will appear on all of the maps for available public EV charger stations. New customers can swiftly locate the site as a place to spend time and shop whilst their vehicles recharge.

Factors for consideration

Selecting a superior engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor to manage the project is critical to its success. Working with the right partner will help business owners to determine the most suitable chargers for the site, the number of points required, their location and the capacity of the infrastructure to handle the additional energy demand, taking into account specific local requirements and regulations.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging info

Fast Charging Speed - typically 6-12 hours
A 6 - 12 hour charge time makes 'fast charging' generally suitable for workplace or hotel use, along with fleet operators wishing to charge vehicles overnight.

Rapid Charging Speed - typically 20-60 minutes
Rapid chargers use a Type 2 charging standard. Rapid AC chargers usually charge an EV up to 80% in 20 to 60 minutes.

Ultra Rapid or Hyper Charging Speed - typically 20-25 minutes
Delivering power from 100kW and more, 100kW, 250kW, 270kW or 350kW, a full charge can be accomplished in as little as 20 to 25 minutes with Ultra-rapid / Hyper chargers

*All charge times are dependent on the capacity of the battery and the % energy stored at the start of the charge. In most cases, EVs charge at a faster speed to 80% of capacity, then slow down to protect the batteries.
