High-performance electric bus charging infrastructure for public transport operations.

Read the article

Project overview.

To support the rollout of electric buses in regular public transport service, we implemented a fast-charging infrastructure at EUROBUS’s site in Bassersdorf, near Zurich. The project contributes directly to the promotion of electric mobility in public transport and supports the operation of electric bus routes in cooperation with Verkehrsbetriebe Glattal AG.

The charging infrastructure enables the simultaneous charging of multiple electric buses and was designed to meet both current operational needs and future expansion plans. The project was delivered within a tight schedule, reflecting the urgency of fleet deployment and the growing demand for zero-emission public transport solutions.

The solution delivered by TSG.

We delivered a complete charging infrastructure solution, covering installation, commissioning and operational readiness. Within just two weeks, we installed and commissioned seven ABB high-power charging systems, consisting of Power Units and Control Units, enabling the simultaneous charging of 14 electric buses.

The installed ABB HVC 300 chargers provide fast, reliable and high-performance charging tailored to the demanding requirements of electric bus operations. The infrastructure ensures that vehicles are charged efficiently and remain available according to operational schedules.

The project was designed with scalability in mind. Technical preparations for future expansion, including transformer installations, are already in place, allowing EUROBUS to increase charging capacity as its electric fleet continues to grow.

In addition to the physical infrastructure, the project includes an intelligent charging management system. A real-time dashboard provides full visibility of charging status and battery levels for each vehicle, ensuring optimal fleet availability and smooth public transport operations.

Results and Impact.

The new charging infrastructure represents a significant step forward in the electrification of public transport operations in the Zurich region. Today, fourteen electric buses operate daily, with six vehicles charging at the internal charging centre in Bassersdorf and additional vehicles using opportunity charging along the route.

The high-performance charging setup ensures reliable daily operation while supporting EUROBUS’s long-term strategy to expand its electric bus fleet. The project demonstrates that large-scale electrification of bus lines is both technically feasible and operationally effective.

By delivering the charging infrastructure within a very short timeframe, we ensured that the necessary charging capacity was available on time to support the operation of electric buses, reinforcing its role as a trusted partner for sustainable mobility solutions in public transport.

"As part of this charging infrastructure project, I would like to sincerely thank all parties involved. Thanks to your thorough planning, precise coordination and solution-oriented approach, you made a major contribution to the project’s success, delivered on time and with high quality."
